SUMMARY:Apple Hill String Quartet Concert
DESCRIPTION: \nCalled “dashing and extraordinary” by The Strad Magazine\, the Apple Hill String Quartet is the resident ensemble of the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music. They serve as the organization’s artistic directors as well as the coaches\, mentors\, and music directors for Apple Hill’s Summer Chamber Music Workshop\, which welcomes 300 students and 45 faculty to its 100 acre campus each summer to study and perform chamber music. During the regular concert season\, the Quartet performs for and teaches thousands more throughout the world while serving as the representatives of Playing for Peace\, Apple Hill’s guiding philosophy of creating community and fostering artistic growth through chamber music. The CMSS concert features the String Quartet #1 by French composer Charles Koechlin\, Strum by Jesse Montgomery\, and the beautiful String Quartet #1 by Tchaikovsky.

Catered by award-winning UMass Dining\, the reception will be held Wednesday\, February 5 from 5:30 – 7:30 at the Eric Carle Museum. \nBeginning with just 6 families in 1990\, last year FOA helped nearly 600 struggling families deal with such issues as homelessness\, domestic violence\, physical and mental health\, immigration\, substance abuse\, and trauma. Working with all members of the family\, FOA helps them gain access to the services they need\, find educational and employment opportunities\, and develop the life skills they need to not only to survive\, but to thrive. “We are proud to help our clients who are important members of our community gain access to the services they need as they learn to advocate for themselves in order to raise happy\, healthy children\,” said FOA Director Laura Reichsman. \n2020 will feature many events to celebrate this milestone. The kickoff reception will be followed by the Jeanne Juster Literacy Fair in May\, the 17th annual “Light Up the Night!” benefit dinner and auction on June 12 and “Warm Up the Night\,” a strolling culinary extravaganza on October 14. \nThe Helen Mitchell Community Service Award is given to an individual or group who best exemplifies a spirit of selfless dedication to helping improve the quality of life for families in the Amherst community. Hudson\, Author\, Professor\, and expert on national security policy and gender\, and Dr. Kathleen Szegda\, Director of Community Research and Evaluation at the Public Health Institute of Western MA. These prominent experts will speak to the progress toward peace\, power\, and prosperity for women\, girls\, and thus for communities.\nThe afternoon will begin with an address from Women’s Fund CEO\, Donna Haghighat with an introduction to our global experts to follow. DESCRIPTION:2020 40 Under Forty Virtual-Hybrid Celebration\nWed.\, Oct. 7 & Thurs.\, Oct. 8\, 2020\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe regularly scheduled gathering to honor our 40 Under Forty Class of 2020 had to be post-poned because of the pandemic and ongoing bans on large gatherings. \nAmid new restrictions imposed by the governor on large gatherings and with a strong desire to keep everyone safe\, it was decided that the most prudent course was to  instead celebrate our honorees’ accomplishments with a hybrid platform. \nThe hybrid event will be spread out over two days on Wed.\, Oct. 7 and Thurs.\, Oct. 8. Each “mini-event” will allow 10 honorees and one guest to celebrate in person at the Upper Vista of the Log Cabin. The award presentation will take place as it normally would\, but with a very small group (under 40 people) in-person. For all paid registered guests\, we will provide a unique code to celebrate virtually with a live stream. Guests will view the virtual program on this page. \nAs mentioned above\, because of the size of the class and to adhere to CDC guidelines\, we will be splitting up the event over two days\, with two sessions on each of those days.
