American International College’s health science programs have long been lauded for preparing professionals in nursing, physical therapy, public health, and occupational therapy. Exercise science recently became part of the AIC curriculum, and in 2021, athletic training will also be included in the college’s offerings.
AIC boasts a diverse and motivated student population, a highly accomplished faculty, and a sterling reputation for teaching and learning dating back to the school’s found- ing in 1885. With the opening of AIC’s Colaccino Center for Health Sciences, the college once again trumpets its com- mitment to higher education. Indeed, the future of health science education has arrived in Springfield, MA, and it is at American International College.
With the explosive growth of many of its programs, espe- cially its graduate offerings, the college has met the need for expansion of its Mason Square/Upper Hill neighborhood campus. Located in the geographic center of Springfield, the gleaming new Colaccino Center for Health Sciences com- plements the ongoing redevelopment of downtown by ex- tending revitalization efforts up the State Street corridor.
The impressive 20,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility provides AIC students with simulation, rehabilitation and hu- man performance laboratories as well as smart classrooms, ample study areas, faculty offices, and conference space.
Named for AIC alumnus and Board of Trustees Chair Frank Colaccino, the facility was conceived and built to promote student pursuits in different disciplines while fostering their ability to learn and collaborate with both peers and faculty in

“Healthcare is a growth industry,” said Colaccino, President of the Colvest Group. “Now, and especially into the future as our population ages, our healthcare system will need talent- ed individuals trained to use the latest technology and the latest methods. AIC is dedicated to this task, and the new health sciences center will play a huge role in these efforts.”
There is no one more proud of the facility’s opening than AIC President Vince Maniaci. While noting why the struc- ture was named the Colaccino Center for Health Sciences, Maniaci says, “At a time when the institution was in great fiscal need, Frank [Colaccino] was committed to preserving AIC’s longevity. Through his leadership and unwavering service, we have seen the college grow immeasurably. It is in tribute to Frank’s dedication, loyalty, and financial support that we elected to name the new educational facility in his honor.”
Those teaching and administering health programs at AIC are equally enthusiastic about the center and what it means for the school, the region, and especially for the students who will not just learn there, but learn by doing. Their com- ments echo and expand upon those of Colaccino:

of Health Sciences: “Health sciences is an area in considerable demand across our region, and there are tremendous workforce needs. AIC has been a strong leader in healthcare education for many years. This new facility allows us to expand our enrollment in occupational therapy and physical therapy and accommodate our teaching needs for PT, OT, nursing, public health, and now exercise science; it is a huge step forward for AIC and this region. As Baby Boomers age, we need to be ready to help them stay healthy and functioning as long as they can.”
