MISSION STATEMENT
Now celebrating 40 years of service, the mission of
the Gray House is to help its neighbors facing hardships
to meet their immediate
and transitional needs by providing food, clothing, and educational services in a safe, positive environment in the North End of Springfield. The Gray House is “a place where peace is lived and learned, and hope is shared.”
UPCOMING EVENTS
• 33rd annual Spaghetti Supper. Thursday, March 21 at the Greek Cultural Center in Springfield. This family-friendly event, which typically hosts more than 400 attendees, plays a crucial role in raising the funds needed to help us serve our community throughout the year.
• Fill the Plate, Feed a Family Challenge. Throughout the month of September, we raise awareness and funds to support the operations and improvements of our food- assistance program.
WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
In 1984, five Sisters of St. Joseph and one lay person opened the Gray House to provide programs that met the civic, social, and educational needs of their neighbors living in poverty in the North End. From the humble mission of serving the immediate neighborhood, today, our programs reach more than 13,000 unique individuals annually from the greater Springfield community.
The Market provides free groceries to food-insecure households. Increasing equitable access to nutritious food helps reduce health disparities and allows our low- income neighbors to reallocate their limited budgets to expenses that impact their ability to maintain housing and employment.
Our Kids’ Club afterschool and summer program provides a safe, supportive environment for Springfield youth from low-income families. The children build self- confidence, foster positive relationships, develop literacy skills, and create a foundation for healthy decision making and academic success.
The Adult Education program helps migrants, refugees, and asylees improve their English-language skills while incorporating life skills. Students gain the skills and confidence needed to advocate for themselves and their family, along with new or improved employment opportunities.
