MISSION STATEMENT
Square One is committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed at school, at work, and in life by providing educational programs, family-support services, health and
fitness resources, and a voice in the community. We know that children grow up to become better-educated and productive when they have high-quality early education, nurturing adults to care for them, and a safe and health community in which to live. At the core of everything we do is our belief, confirmed by research, that children who begin learning early become better learners for life.
UPCOMING EVENTS
• Holiday Toy Drives, now through Dec. 20 • Kentucky Derby Party, May 5, 2018
WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
Whether we are teaching children to read and write, inspiring an appreciation of fine arts, providing a nourishing meal, or developing a healthy love of play, everything we do at Square One is driven by our vision of a bright future for all children, despite the daunting challenges they face at home. Of the 500 children we serve every day, 100% are poverty-stricken. Many are living in homeless shelters, struggle with food insecurity, have a parent who is in addiction recovery or post-incarcerated, have suffered from abuse and neglect, and/or are in custody of an appointed legal guardian or foster parent. We have seen the profound difference that a high-quality, nurturing early-learning setting can have on all children, particularly those faced with these significant difficulties.
In conjunction with our early-learning programs, Square One offers a wide array of family-service programs to support the parents, grandparents, foster parents, and other caregivers as they work
to overcome their personal challenges, continue their education,
and secure gainful employment. We currently serve 1,500 families annually in this capacity.
GIVING OPPORTUNITIES
Through grants, special events, and the generosity of our corporate and individual donors Springfield Day Nurery dba, Square One works to fund all of its programs, while operating in the most streamlined and cost-effective manner possible.
What does a gift to Square One mean?
• $25 provides three homeless children with round-trip transportation from a shelter to Square One;
$50 provides three childcare sessions so a mom can attend her recovery meetings;
• $100 provides five moms with employment counseling to move them from welfare to work;
• $250 provides a full week of infant child care so young parents can stay in school and earn their diplomas;
• $500 provides developmentally appropriate learning materials for a preschool classroom;
• $2,500 provides staff training to ensure quality programming; and
• $5,000 sponsors a preschool classroom for a full year.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Square One relies on volunteers for classroom support (reading to our children, doing craft projects, playing music/singing); committee work for our special events; fund-raising campaigns; and board of directors leadership. We also welcome volunteers who can assist with childcare during our family-support service programming.
