Boston Olympics Bid is Over

BOSTON — Boston’s improbable bid to host the 2024 Summer Games came to a sudden end Monday, as bid organizers and the U.S. Olympic Committee jointly agreed to pull the bid after Mayor Martin Walsh declared at a hastily scheduled press conference that he was not ready to put the city’s taxpayers on the hook for any cost overruns.

“I cannot commit to putting the taxpayers at risk,” Walsh said at the press conference. “If committing to sign a guarantee today is what’s required to move forward, then Boston is no longer pursuing the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

With Boston now out of the running, the USOC turned its attention to finding a new bidder for the 20124 games, with two-time host Los Angeles emerging as the likely contender.
