GCC Installs Innovative Weatherization Training Labs Ahead of Program Launch
GREENFIELD — Greenfield Community College (GCC) is taking a major step toward preparing the region’s clean energy workforce with the installation of two custom-built weatherization training labs on Wednesday, July 22 at approximately 7:45 a.m, which will serve as the centerpiece of the college’s new weatherization technician training program launching this August.
The labs, constructed from repurposed shipping containers specially retrofitted as hands-on training spaces, will be delivered to GCC and hoisted into place by crane behind the East Building. Once installed, they will provide students with a realistic environment to learn the practical skills needed to improve building energy efficiency and prepare for careers in the growing weatherization industry.
Unlike a traditional classroom, the labs are designed to replicate real-world working conditions, giving students the opportunity to practice air sealing, insulation installation, diagnostic testing, and other essential weatherization techniques before entering the field.
“The installation of these labs represents an exciting milestone for the college and for workforce development in our region,” said Kristin Cole, vice president of GCC’s Workforce Development division. “These purpose-built training spaces allow us to deliver the kind of immersive, hands-on instruction that employers are looking for while creating pathways into well-paying careers that support Massachusetts’ clean energy future.”
The weatherization labs were made possible through an equipment grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), complementing an earlier grant that helped establish the weatherization technician training program.
A key component of the project has been GCC’s partnership with Greenfield-based Oxbow Design Build, which has worked alongside the college since the earliest stages of the grant application to help design and develop the specialized training spaces.
“From the beginning, this has been a true community partnership,” Cole said. “Oxbow Design Build brought valuable industry expertise to the project, helping us create training environments that reflect the conditions students will encounter on the job.”
The weatherization technician program is delivered through GCC’s Workforce Development division in partnership with Community Action Pioneer Valley, which manages participant recruitment, eligibility, and case management. Together, the organizations are expanding access to careers in energy efficiency while helping address the growing demand for skilled weatherization professionals across Western Mass.
Demand for trained weatherization technicians continues to grow as homeowners, businesses, and public agencies invest in energy efficiency improvements to reduce costs, improve comfort, and meet the Commonwealth’s climate goals. The new program will equip participants with the practical skills employers need while opening the door to long-term career opportunities in the clean energy sector.
