HOLYOKE — The Wealth Transition Collective, a financial-planning firm in Holyoke, will host its second annual week-long food drive from Monday, Nov. 15 to Friday, Nov. 19 to benefit Margaret’s Pantry in Holyoke in honor of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.

Last year, the firm collected more than 1,300 pounds of food and more than $3,000 in monetary donations. Individuals can drop off non-perishable and canned foods during office business hours (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at 1632 Northampton St. in Holyoke. Weather permitting, there will be a drop-off table outside the front door for easy accessibility.

Some of the most-needed items at the pantry during this time of year are stuffing mixes, gravy, soups, stews, baking mixes, frosting, syrup, salad dressing, condiments, Jell-O, and kids’ snack items.

Margaret’s Pantry, a division of Providence Ministries for the Needy, is a full-service food pantry that has provided food to residents of Greater Holyoke for more than 30 years. Presently, the pantry provides food to more than 180 families each month, and approximately 72,000 meals a year are distributed to the needy in the community. The number of people served continues to grow, with 1,870,426 pounds of food given out in 2020 alone.

“We feel very fortunate to be in a position to make a difference in the community by supporting the efforts of organizations like Providence Ministries for the Needy,” said Greg Sheehan, CEO of the Wealth Transition Collective.

CHICOPEE — The St. Augustine Center for Ethics, Religion, and Culture (CERC) at Elms College will hold its inaugural Distinguished Lecture in Culture on Wednesday, Nov. 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. Due to COVID-19 protocols, this event will be held virtually via Zoom.

The event will feature a keynote speech by Dr. Thea James, associate professor of Emergency Medicine at Boston Medical Center/Boston University School of Medicine, where she is also president of the Boston Medical and Dental staff, vice president of mission, and associate chief medical officer.

“On behalf of the St. Augustine Center for Ethics, Religion, and Culture, I am very pleased and honored that Dr. James will deliver the keynote speech at the inaugural Distinguished Lecture in Culture,” said Peter DePergola II, executive director of CERC, Shaughness Family Chair for the Study of the Humanities, and associate professor of Bioethics and Medical Humanities at Elms.

According to DePergola, James will address the racial, ethnic, and/or cultural inequalities illuminated by the COVID-19 pandemic as they pertain to scarce resource allocation and equitable healthcare delivery.

The St. Augustine Center for Ethics, Religion, and Culture was launched in October 2020 to increase engagement and discourse on the most pressing and complex questions related to ethics, religion, and culture in today’s society, and to lead the regional community in thoughtful, engaging dialogue.

“Elms College has a history of uniting individuals together in the common pursuit of addressing fundamental ethical, religious, and cultural issues. This lecture aligns well with Elms’ focus on academic discourse that dates back to the college’s founding in 1928 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield,” DePergola said.

James’ passion is in public health, both domestically and globally. She is director of the Boston Medical Center site of the Massachusetts Violence Intervention Advocacy Program and a supervising medical officer on the Boston Disaster Medical Assistance Team under the Department of Health and Human Services, which has responded to several disasters in the U.S. and across the globe.

James has been part of the emergency response to 9/11 in New York City, Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005, the earthquake in Iran in 2003, and the earthquake in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti in 2010.

MONSON — With the season of giving right around the corner, Monson Savings Bank (MSB) is reaching out to the public and requesting they submit their votes for the bank’s 2022 Community Giving Initiative.

For more than a decade, MSB has been seeking the help of the community to plan the bank’s community-giving activities by inviting members of the community to vote for the organizations they would like the bank to support during the upcoming year. Everyone is welcome to participate and can cast their vote online by clicking here.

Voters may provide the names of up to three organizations they would like the bank to donate to in 2022. The only requirements are that the organizations be designated a nonprofit and that the organizations provide services within the bank’s geography. To be fair, the bank is requesting that each person vote only one time for their three organizations. Voting ends on Friday, Dec. 31 at 3 p.m.

Monson Savings Bank pledges to support the top 10 organizations that receive the most votes. The 10 organizations will be announced by mid-January, and donations will then be distributed.

Visitors to the voting page can also view a compiled list of organizations the bank has supported in years past, as well as previously nominated organizations.

SPRINGFIELD — Western New England University will host high-school students and their parents at an open house on Sunday, Nov. 14 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting in the University Commons. This undergraduate open house is intended for all prospective students, regardless of their year in high school. It is an opportunity to come to campus to get a sense of the university community, while learning about the wide variety of academic programs and emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration.

Students and parents will have the chance to tour the campus and a first-year residence hall, meet current students, get a general overview of the admissions and financial-aid process, and have academic questions answered. The day concludes with an exhibit where students can gather more information on student clubs and activities, honors programs, athletic opportunities at both the NCAA and recreational levels, as well as hear from the Career Development Center regarding the varied internship and career opportunities students are receiving.
