Editorial

More than 14 years after a tornado destroyed its former home, Square One recently opened its new home at a ribbon cutting that looked a whole lot like a Frank Capra movie.

Indeed, the ceremony became a celebration of the people and the institutions that it took to get this done — from the federal, state, and local governments to the Davis Foundation and the Red Sox Foundation, to the Balise family, which ultimately contributed more than $3 million toward the cause.

Amid the many comments from the speakers about going back to square one and rising from the ashes, there was a palpable sense of pride in all that had been overcome for Square One to be able to turn the key at its new, $18 million facility and remain in Springfield’s South End, where it all started 142 years ago as Springfield Day Nursery.

It took 14 years because Square One first had to get back on its feet, which became more challenging when another of its facilities was leveled in a natural gas explosion in 2012. And then it had to decide to what to do and where to rebuild. And then it had to survive a pandemic. And then it had to find a site — and that site turned out to be its old site. And then it had to raise the money, clear the site, and design and build a new facility.

None of that was easy, but just as Square One was committed to staying in the South End and building new, the community it has served for nearly a century and a half became committed to help get the job done.

There were many contributors to this cause — from the federal government and its New Markets Tax Credits program to the city chipping in $1 million in ARPA money; from the foundations to the Balise family, which first donated $1 million and then bought a building on Main Street for more than $2 million and donated it to Square One to create a campus.

And there were many times at the ribbon cutting when it was said this ‘wouldn’t have happened without…’ any of the above.

And while that’s accurate, the truth is it wouldn’t have happened without all of them coming together as they did.

This was a 14-year journey, one with more than enough bumps in the road to traverse. But like all Frank Capra movies, this one also had a happy ending, one the community can share in.

As we head into 2026, Gen Z is signaling that a few workplace practices could use a refresh. At the top of the list: the notion that fully remote work is the ideal and that performance reviews should be limited to an annual conversation.

For Gen Z, personal connection is a critical component of being engaged with their work. Contrary to popular belief, Gen Z actively wants to establish relationships with their colleagues and feel a sense of community.

While fully remote setups have been popular among some generations, Gen Z is showing less of an appetite for this type of model. In fact, one recent report states that they are the “least likely generation to prefer exclusively remote work.” The reason for this lies in the fear of isolation and social disconnect that is often associated with this type of model. For many, concerns about mental health outweigh the appeal of a fully remote schedule.

For 2026, Gen Z would rather see hybrid work options. One recent report states that 83% of surveyed Gen Zers would choose the hybrid model over others. Why? Hybrid work strikes the right balance between in-person collaboration, where they can build relationships, learn on the job, and feel like they are a part of the culture, and also providing them with the remote flexibility that supports work-life boundaries.

Many Gen Z professionals are also vocal about wanting their colleagues, not just themselves, to come into the office more. For them, the value of in-office time comes from shared energy and social learning. While not all organizations can accommodate such schedules, it’s still important to acknowledge these emerging trends. Your Gen Z employees aren’t pushing for fully remote work, but rather seeking more connection through in-person opportunities.

The traditional model of annual performance reviews is another topic of contention for Gen Z as we move into 2026, as many feel this approach is slightly antiquated.

Gen Z wants more personalized, consistent feedback from their supervisors. Why? So they can progress in their careers more quickly, correct mistakes faster, and stay on track with their responsibilities. Waiting for the highly anticipated annual review is not seen as effective for this group; rather it’s seen as backward-looking.

What most Gen Z employees would like to see is an open-door policy and real-time feedback. Frequent, personalized check-ins boost their engagement and support their growth because they experience this style as coaching rather than criticism.

These check-ins don’t need to be long or formal; even brief touchpoints can go a long way. This might look like quick digital messages through tools like MS Teams or Slack, or short weekly meetings to review projects and address concerns. The goal here is to show intention and transparency with communication. Gen Z doesn’t want a rating at the end of each year; rather, they want coaching and real-time feedback to help them get better as the year goes on.

Heading into 2026, it’s not about rejecting remote work or traditional reviews, but about adapting them to create more connection, clarity, and authenticity. What matters most for Gen Z in the year ahead is fostering a culture where they can grow and genuinely feel valued.

Professionally, he devoted 40 years as an educator with Chicopee Public Schools. As a volunteer leader, he has volunteered for more than 20 years at Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen & Pantry, including service as board president, and eight years with the Friends of the RiverMills Center, where he also served as president. Additionally, he has served on the Chicopee Veterans’ Services office board, the charter review board, and the board of directors for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

Founded in 2021, HB Real Estate has quickly become one of Chicopee’s standout real estate brokerages. Since opening with 12 agents, the firm has expanded to 31 agents across offices in Chicopee and Wilbraham. Known for its highly personalized, relationship-driven approach, HB Real Estate is also deeply community-minded, supporting local nonprofits including Kane’s Krusade, the Chicopee Queer Consortium, Alianza DV Services, Rick’s Place, and Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen & Pantry. The firm frequently hosts and participates in local events, such as its upcoming Holiday Author Stroll benefiting the Bellamy House Assoc.

Serving Chicopee since 1980, Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen & Pantry has been a lifeline for residents facing food insecurity. What began as a small volunteer-led effort offering peanut butter and jelly sandwiches has grown into a vital community institution providing hot meals, groceries, and essential services to thousands of families each year. The organization offers year-round meal service, a robust food pantry, holiday programs, monthly health clinics, and social service referrals. In 2021, it expanded its reach by launching a mobile pantry with weekly neighborhood stops. Under Executive Director Kim Caisse, a long-time volunteer and community advocate, Lorraine’s has strengthened its presence and partnerships across Chicopee.

For years, Leclerc has been one of the chamber’s most reliable, energetic, and enthusiastic volunteers. A longtime member of the Shining Stars events committee, she has played a key role in shaping and elevating one of the chamber’s most celebrated annual traditions. In 2023, when the chamber revived its member relations committee, LeClerc stepped up as chair, bringing new energy, structure, and community-minded leadership to the group. Under her guidance, the committee has become a vital connection point for member engagement, support, and outreach.

SPRINGFIELD — Way Finders is teaming up with First Student, Springfield’s school bus transportation company, for a Stuff the Bus toy and fundraising drive on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Boston Road Walmart in Springfield.

“Children and families deserve joyful holidays, but that can be challenging when living in shelter. Money is tight. You don’t have your own place,” said Megan Pete, director of Development at Way Finders. “Our goal is to make the holidays a little brighter for the hundreds of families in our shelters this year.”

Stuff the Bus accepts new, unwrapped toys for children from newborn through age 13. It accepts donations of funds or gift cards for teenagers.

Stuff the Bus was inspired by Takira Williams, a bus driver for the Springfield Public Schools. After seeing a post from Way Finders asking people to sign up for its toy drive, she had an even bigger idea — why not host a Stuff the Bus event? She brought the idea to her manager at First Student, and the company agreed to provide the bus and support this event.

All are invited to stop by and bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate. Way Finders will distribute toys to families in their shelters in time for the holidays.

SPRINGFIELD — Tech Foundry, the regional leader in IT workforce development, training, and digital literacy, announced its 2025 end-of-year fundraising campaign, titled Western MA Forward.

In May, Tech Foundry learned that federal funding for its Tech Hub in Holyoke, which offers free computer skills classes, device distribution, and help desk services, had been slashed by the Trump administration. Since then, the Hub has been forced to cut services from 40 hours per week to six hours per week, significantly reducing the number of individuals and community partners it can serve.

The campaign seeks to raise $50,000 by Dec. 31 so that Tech Foundry can rebuild Tech Hub Holyoke’s capacity to serve more residents and expand services to neighboring communities.

“Digital literacy fuels our economy, and without federal funding, we’re looking to our community to help fill the gaps,” said Tricia Canavan, CEO of Tech Foundry. “We’re serving a fraction of the neighbors we once reached. But with your help, we can restore our operations for the people who need us every month. Thank you to our supporters who have already joined our campaign — and for those who have partnered with Tech Foundry during the 10-plus years we’ve been serving our region.”

BOSTON — As Gov. Maura Healey’s Competitiveness Council convenes for its inaugural meeting, the Massachusetts High Technology Council urges it to focus immediately on reforms that will reduce the cost of creating, operating, and expanding businesses in the Commonwealth. Two newly published reports — one on population shifts away from high-tax states, and the other on corporate relocations from Massachusetts — make clear that the state’s competitiveness is at stake.

According to a Nov. 25 report by the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, Massachusetts is losing residents at one of the fastest rates in the nation: on net, a taxpayer leaves the Commonwealth every 11 minutes and 38 seconds. The report highlights a broader nationwide trend: individuals and businesses increasingly relocate from high-tax, high-cost states toward states with lower burdens — such as Florida, Texas, and North Carolina — where fiscal policy is more business-friendly.

That trend isn’t hypothetical. A Dec. 2 article in the Boston Business Journal reports that several Massachusetts-based companies — including key players in technology and manufacturing — are relocating or already have relocated operations to neighboring states, including New Hampshire, citing lower costs and a more favorable business environment. The exodus of companies underscores how eroding competitiveness is translating directly into lost jobs and lost economic activity in Massachusetts.

These data points, the Massachusetts High Technology Council argues, cannot be ignored, and demonstrate that Massachusetts risks losing both its workforce and its employers — especially in high-growth sectors — unless state policymakers act swiftly to recalibrate the business climate.

The High Technology Council urges the Competitiveness Council to prioritize three key reforms:

• Tax and regulatory relief, including reviewing state and local tax burdens (including employer assessments like UI), streamlining permitting, and eliminating redundant licensing or regulatory hurdles that add to business costs;

• Incentives for business growth and retention, such as incentives or credits for firms that stay and expand operations in Massachusetts, and support for capital investment and innovation; and

• Competitive cost-of-living and infrastructure policies, which include addressing housing, transportation, and energy costs that influence worker and business decisions about where to locate or expand.

“It’s time to stop treating high taxes and overregulation as immutable,” Massachusetts High Technology Council President Christopher Anderson said. “These reports make it unmistakably clear: talent, companies, and capital are mobile — and they’re voting with their feet. If Massachusetts wants to keep and attract the businesses driving innovation, growth, and high-paying jobs, the time to act is now.”

The High Technology Council looks forward to working with the Competitiveness Council, the Healey administration, and the Legislature to implement pro-growth reforms that strengthen Massachusetts’ competitiveness and position the Commonwealth as a magnet for investment, innovation, and opportunity.

BOSTON — As homes and neighborhoods across Massachusetts light up for the holidays, Eversource is sharing simple ways customers can create a festive atmosphere while managing energy use, saving money and staying safe throughout the season.

“From holiday lights and family gatherings to extra time spent cooking, this is a busy and joyful time of year,” Eversource Energy Efficiency Manager Bill Stack said. “We want our customers to enjoy every bit of it without worrying about higher energy use or safety risks. A few easy steps — like using LEDs, setting timers, and being mindful of how and when appliances are used — can help reduce energy usage, make bills more manageable, and keep celebrations safe.”

Customers can reduce energy use by switching from older incandescent holiday lights to LED decorations, which use up to 90% less energy, last significantly longer, stay cooler, and reduce the risk of fire. Using programmable timers ensures lights aren’t left on all night, while advanced power strips can eliminate standby energy loss, particularly helpful for inflatables, some of which can add up to $12 per month to an energy bill.

Safety is an equally important part of holiday decorating. Eversource reminds customers to inspect all lights and extension cords before use and to discard any with cracked sockets, frayed wires, or loose connections. When decorating outdoors, customers should always look up and stay far away from power lines, never raise ladders or lift objects near overhead wires, and ensure that any lights used outside are clearly labeled for outdoor use. Extension cords should never be placed under rugs or tightly coiled, as they can overheat, and outdoor decorations should always be plugged into GFCI outlets, with cords kept off the ground and away from moisture.

Hosting and cooking for the holidays can also increase energy use, but small changes can help. Lowering the thermostat before guests arrive can make homes more comfortable when combined with body heat and oven warmth. Customers can save even more by waiting until the dishwasher is full before running it, air drying dishes when possible, covering pots and pans while cooking, and choosing smaller appliances like toaster or convection ovens, which use significantly less energy than a full-size oven.

WESTERN MASS. — After months of community conversation, donor feedback, and collaborative planning, the Resilient Valley Coalition launched its Match My DAF campaign. The initiative will unlock donor-advised funds (DAFs) and matching gifts to bring resources to local nonprofits facing steep federal funding cuts.

Nationally, more than $251 billion is currently sitting in donor-advised funds. These charitable investment accounts let individuals set aside cash, stocks, and other financial gifts for future charitable giving. Resilient Valley, a growing coalition of nonprofits working in farming, conservation, food security, health, and environmental justice, is urging donors that now is the time to put these charitable dollars to good use.

“When the coalition nonprofits came together earlier in the year, many of our budgets had been gutted overnight, and the ripple effects were only beginning,” said Lora Wondolowski, director of Advancement & Communications at the Peace Development Fund. “We knew we couldn’t face this crisis in isolation. Match My DAF is a way for everyone to come together — DAF owners, businesses, individuals, and nonprofits — to move resources now, when they can have the greatest impact.”

To participate in Match My DAF, DAF holders pledge to give at least 10% more than they distributed last year, directing those gifts to nonprofits serving the communities of the three Western Mass. counties. Gifts made between now and May 1, 2026, can be nominated for a dollar-for-dollar match, up to $5,000 per grant. The match awards will be selected through two lottery rounds scheduled for Feb. 2 and May 2, 2026.

The coalition welcomes businesses and individuals without DAFs to participate by contributing directly to the matching fund, which enables local donors’ DAF gifts to be doubled. Nonprofits throughout the region are invited to spread the word among their supporters and encourage DAF holders to nominate grants for the chance to receive matching dollars.

Northampton resident, businessman, and philanthropist Al Griggs has stepped forward to support the campaign. “I’m supporting Match My DAF because our community needs bold, collective action,” he said. “If you have the ability to give, whether through a DAF or directly to the match fund, I encourage you to join me.”

Since its formation earlier this year, Resilient Valley has united organizations that collectively serve tens of thousands of Western Mass. residents. The coalition includes All Farmers, Amherst Survival Center, Cancer Connection, Center for EcoTechnology, Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture, Grow Food Northampton, Hilltown Land Trust, Hitchcock Center for the Environment, Kestrel Land Trust, Northampton Survival Center, Nuestras Raíces, Peace Development Fund, and Stone Soup Café. While these organizations have organized the campaign, any nonprofit in the Pioneer Valley that conforms to the campaign criteria is eligible for a match.

“The Match My DAF campaign is a powerful way to strengthen the nonprofits that hold our communities up,” Wondolowski said. “Let’s work together to protect the vision of a just, sustainable, and resilient future for our region.”

HOLYOKE — Due to forecasts of inclement weather, the future planning community breakfast planned for today, Dec. 2, at Holyoke Community College (HCC) has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 9.

Regional leaders from diverse sectors of the Pioneer Valley economy will now gather at HCC next week for a discussion that will help create the next chapter in the college’s 80-year history. The general public is also invited to attend this breakfast event, “Shaping the Future: A Community Conversation,” from 7:30 to 10 a.m. in the PeoplesBank Conference Room (301/303) in the Kittredge Center for Business and Workforce Development, on the main HCC campus, 303 Homestead Ave.

“We appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we work to ensure meaningful community engagement while prioritizing everyone’s safety,” HCC President George Timmons said. “Your voice matters deeply in this process, and we look forward to the conversation.”

The panelists include Megan Burke, president of the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts; Anne Kandilis, director of Springfield WORKS; Frank Martínez López, executive director of Enlace de Familias; Jason Pacheco, director of Workforce Planning and Analytics at Baystate Health; Javier Reyes, chancellor of UMass Amherst; and Aaron Vega, director of the Office of Planning and Economic Development for the city of Holyoke and incoming president and CEO of the Western Massachusetts Economic Development Council.

Among the other attendees will be state Rep. Pat Duffy; John Reiff, director of Civic Learning and Engagement with the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education; and representatives from MassHire Holyoke, Way Finders, Holyoke Health Center, Tech Foundry, Holyoke Public Schools, Dean Tech, Nuestras Raices, and the Public Health Institute of Western Massachusetts.

HCC President George Timmons will kick off the event and set the stage for this community conversation. A question-and-answer session will follow the panel discussion.

“At Holyoke Community College, student success is a community effort,” Timmons said. “When our students thrive — when they graduate, transfer, gain new skills, launch careers, and become leaders — our entire region benefits. These leaders, our education partners, and others will share perspectives on the opportunities and challenges facing our community, sparking table conversations that will inform how we write the next chapter for HCC — and for our region.”

The event is part of “SP 3.0,” the third iteration of the college’s strategic planning process, which began with the start of the fall semester. The college drafted its first strategic plan in 2018. That plan was refreshed in 2021. So far, emerging priorities for Strategic Plan 3.0 include collaboration and partnerships, as well as workforce and post-graduation success.

“Together, we’ve achieved many of the ambitious goals of our previous strategic plans, creating pathways and opportunities that have transformed lives and strengthened our community,” Timmons said. “Strategic Plan 3.0 is the next chapter in that shared work, and we need to hear as many voices as possible to help us chart the course ahead.”

EASTHAMPTON — Hogan Technology, a managed technology services provider, is encouraging business owners to take advantage of the 2025 IRS Section 179 tax deduction that allows companies to immediately expense qualifying technology and equipment purchases. For 2025, businesses can deduct up to $2,500,000 on eligible purchases such as servers, IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, software licenses, and phone systems that are placed in service before Dec. 31.

“Section 179 remains one of the most effective ways for businesses to invest in growth while simultaneously reducing taxable income,” said Sean Hogan, president of Hogan Technology. “While we’re not tax professionals, we view it as our responsibility to help our clients make smart financial and technological decisions that strengthen their operations.”

Many organizations mistakenly wait until the last quarter to consider capital upgrades, he noted, but Hogan Technology emphasizes that early planning ensures businesses can implement new systems and claim the full deduction. “Each year, we see companies leave money on the table simply because they didn’t act fast enough. This deduction can make a real difference in profitability by freeing up capital for innovation and security investments.”

The Section 179 program allows 100% depreciation on qualifying equipment, provided it’s operational by the end of the calendar year and used more than 50% of the time for business purposes. With the continued rise in cyberthreats and digital transformation, Hogan added, the timing couldn’t be better for companies to modernize their infrastructure.

Hogan Technology advises all businesses to consult with a CPA or qualified tax advisor to determine how much they can deduct under the updated 2025 guidelines.

CHICOPEE — After several months defined by benefit cuts, a government shutdown, delayed SNAP payments, and rising need in every corner of Western Mass., the 16th annual March for the Food Bank on Nov. 24-25 delivered a striking result: more than $830,000 raised after two days and more than 43 miles on foot.

The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts set an ambitious $650,000 goal this year. The community didn’t just meet it; they blew past it. And because every dollar helps create the equivalent of two nutritious meals, this year’s March will provide more than 1.5 million meals to families, elders, and children in all four counties.

“This outpouring of generosity is a testament to the strength and spirit of this region,” said Andrew Morehouse, executive director of the Food Bank. “When the stakes are highest, Western Massachusetts rallies together.”

This year’s march was full of milestones. It welcomed the largest group of marchers in event history, achieved the highest fundraising total ever, and launched the region’s first Berkshire Mini-March in Pittsfield, drawing crowds, energy, and enthusiasm.

The Food Bank’s thanks radio personality and march founder Monte Belmonte, who walked every mile, kept spirits high on the road and on the airwaves, and honored the icons of public broadcasting through his tributes to Bob Ross, Bert and Ernie, and Mr. Rogers. The Food Bank also extends gratitude to U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern and Gov. Maura Healey, whose leadership and commitment to ending hunger continue to strengthen the region’s food assistance network.

“This march proves what’s possible when a community refuses to look away from hunger,” said Jillian Morgan, director of Development at the Food Bank. “The community showed up with incredible spirit and resolve to make a difference. They fundraised, marched, matched donations, and cheered us on. That collective power is how change happens.”

With momentum at its peak, the Food Bank has raised its march goal to $1 million and will continue accepting donations through Dec. 31. Donations to the March for the Food Bank can be made by visiting www.marchforthefoodbank.org.

“If this year’s march has shown us anything, it’s that Western Massachusetts never backs down from a challenge,” Morehouse said.

SPRINGFIELD — Rock 102 (WAQY-FM) wrapped up its 32nd annual Mayflower Marathon food drive last week, delivering another show of community spirit and generosity. The three-day event, held at MGM Springfield in the days leading up to Thanksgiving, raised $260,000 in food and cash donations — a new record for the long-running tradition.

Morning hosts Bax & Nagle powered through 52 hours of broadcasting, rallying listeners to donate non-perishable food items to benefit Open Pantry Community Services of Springfield. With food insecurity affecting more than 50% of households across Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin counties, the need for support has never been greater.

The Mayflower Marathon’s success is fueled by unwavering community involvement. Local residents and businesses stepped up in a big way, including major partners like the Springfield Thunderbirds, Capitol Relocation and Logistics, Xfinity, Camping World of West Hatfield, Arment Trucking, and many more. Thanks to their efforts, four tractor trailers were filled with food, helping Open Pantry meet the growing demand for assistance.

“The response this year was nothing short of extraordinary,” Rock 102 Director of Content Alex Byrne said. “The generosity of the people Western Mass. continues to inspire us year after year.”

This year’s drive was dedicated to former Rock 102 morning co-host and Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Famer John O’Brien, who passed away last week after a courageous 14-year battle with cancer. He was, and will always remain, a cornerstone of Rock 102’s history, and will be remembered fondly by numerous friends and colleagues.

Among his many contributions, one of the most enduring is the Mayflower Marathon food drive. O’Brien helped launch this event 32 years ago, and it will continue for many years to come in his honor.
