Age of Excellence Award Nominations

Through June 14: Celebrating achievement, purpose, and possibility at every stage of life, Glenmeadow announced the opening of nominations for the Age of Excellence Awards: Celebrating Success Over 60 — now entering its third year of honoring remarkable community members. Building on the success of the past two years, this signature event continues to spotlight older adults whose lives reflect vitality, resilience, and meaningful contribution. The Age of Excellence Awards honor individuals age 60 and above who are making significant contributions in a wide range of pursuits. It may be through innovative career achievements, active community involvement, ongoing personal development, or outstanding commitment to others. Nominations may be submitted online at glenmeadow.org. A distinguished panel of community leaders will thoughtfully review all submissions and select this year’s honorees. Award recipients will be celebrated during an inspiring ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 2 at Twin Hills Country Club.

Farm Credit East Photo Contest

Through July 31: Farm Credit East is currently seeking creative images of modern Northeast agriculture, commercial fishing, and forest products to fill the pages of its 2027 Agricultural Views calendar. Upload picturesque images from the farm, woods, or dock at farmcrediteast.com/calendar by July 31 for a chance to win $100. Farm Credit East is looking for fresh imagery that represents Northeast farming, horticulture, forestry, and commercial fishing during every season, as well as photographs that celebrate rural life in New England, New York, or New Jersey. Photos are selected based on technical quality, clarity, and composition, as well as photos that capture unique views of modern agriculture and rural life. From all entries, 14 photos will be selected for a $100 prize each. Additional photos will be selected to fill the calendar pages, each earning a $25 prize. Winning photographs will be featured in Farm Credit East’s 2027 calendar. Only digital photos are accepted. Outrun Hunger

May 17: Rachel’s Table of Western Massachusetts, a food rescue and hunger alleviation organization, is set to Outrun Hunger in its biennial 5K race and 1-mile family-friendly walk in Forest Park. The event begins welcome announcements at 8:30 a.m. and a 9 a.m. race start. Visit feedwma.org/outrun-hunger-2026 to register. The proceeds from the race go to fight hunger all year long, with programs that feed the immediate need as well as nourish long-term sustainable food secure solutions. The race/walk is also presented by the Rachel’s Table teen board, a youth leadership part of Rachel’s Table whose mission is to educate themselves and others about food insecurity while serving the local community with impactful projects that help fight hunger. The public is invited to register to run, walk, do a virtual run, or just come by to help raise awareness and make a difference. All registered runners and walkers will be able to visit the Zoo at Forest Park and Education Center for free on race day, sponsored by the Zoo at Forest Park and supported by the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts. Boomer from the Springfield Thunderbirds will be in attendance, and DJ Matt Peterson will get attendees moving with fun music and entertainment. Local legislators have been invited to speak as well; State Sens. Oliveira and Adam Gomez and state Reps. Brian Ashe and Carlos Gonzales will be in attendance.

 

Mozart and More at 52 Sumner

May 17: The Springfield Chamber Players will present the SCP Oboe Quartet at 52 Sumner at 3 p.m. Marsha Harbison, assistant concertmaster of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra (SSO), will lead the group to perform works by Mozart and more. She will be joined by SSO oboist Karen Hosmer, SSO violist Dani Rimoni, and SSO cellist Boris Kogan. This concert is the last of a five-concert series at 52 Sumner, where the Springfield Chamber Players will have finished their second season. Also, this concert will be in honor of Marsha Harbison, who is retiring from the Springfield Symphony Orchestra after 49 years, and her late husband, Dr. William Harbison, who was a staunch supporter of the Springfield Chamber Players.

 

Free Shred Day

May 23: bankESB invites customers and members of the community to a free Shred Day on Saturday, May 23 at its Belchertown office, located at 40 State St. Residents can reduce their risk of identity theft by bringing old mail, receipts, statements and bills, canceled checks, pay stubs, medical records, or any other unwanted paper documents containing personal or confidential information and shredding them safely and securely for free. InfoShred, a professional document destruction company, will be on site in the bank’s parking lot and can accept up to two boxes of documents per car. No appointment is necessary.

 

Forest Park Zoo Wine Safari

May 30: The Zoo in Forest Park invites everyone on a trip around the world at its Wine Safari fundraiser from 2 to 6 p.m. Wine Safari pairs wine from different countries with an animal from the same region, allowing guests to sample wines and meet wildlife from destinations near and far — without the cost of airfare. The Zoo has partnered with MGM Springfield’s Food and Beverage team and the Culinary Arts program at Lower Pioneer Valley Career Technical Education Center (CTEC). The $55 ticket includes wine samples from 2 to 6 p.m. (while supplies last), charcuterie, small bites and desserts, and animal encounters and keeper talks from members of the Zoo’s animal care and education teams. This event is restricted to adults age 21 and older, and a pre-purchased ticket is required to attend. All IDs will be checked at the door. Tickets are limited and are on sale now at www.forestparkzoo.org/wine-safari. The Zoo will be open to the general public prior to the event on May 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., but will close to the general public at 1 p.m. to allow staff to prepare for Wine Safari.

 

Step into Summer Walk, Run, or Roll

June 1-7: Access Care Partners is encouraging community members to “move with purpose” by participating in its upcoming Step into Summer Virtual Walk, Run, or Roll. This flexible, inclusive event invites participants of all abilities to complete a 5K (approximately three miles) or engage in one hour of movement during the week — whether that’s walking, running, rolling, biking, dancing, or any activity that gets them moving. Participants can take part anywhere, from their neighborhood or a local trail to their own living room, and complete the challenge all at once or spread it out over the week. All proceeds from the event will go directly to Access Care Partners programs, which support older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout the community. Registration costs $25, which is applied towards the fundraising goals of participants, who are encouraged to invite friends and family to support their efforts through pledges or donations. Junior Achievement Golf Tournament

June 5: Junior Achievement of Western Massachusetts (JAWM) will host its 28th annual golf tournament at Crumpin-Fox Golf Club in Bernardston, inviting community members and business leaders to enjoy a day of golf while supporting programs that empower local youth. The event begins with registration at 8 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. shotgun start. The tournament offers participants a top-tier golfer package in support of JAWM’s mission to prepare young people for success in work and life. Proceeds from the tournament directly fund JAWM learning experiences provided to students ages 5-25 throughout Western Mass. and beyond. 40 Under Forty

June 11: BusinessWest will celebrate the 20th annual class of its 40 Under Forty awards, the region’s most prestigious recognition program honoring outstanding young professionals who are shaping the future of Western Massachusetts. This year’s honorees are profiled in the April 27 issue of BusinessWest and at businesswest.com. The awards gala will take place at 5 p.m. at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. Tickets cost $140 per person, and tables of 10 are available; reserve a spot at businesswest.com. The 20th annual 40 Under Forty program is presented by PeoplesBank and sponsored by the Dowd Agencies, Mercedes-Benz of Springfield, and the Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst.

 

STCC’s College for Kids

June 22 to Aug. 14: Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) announced the return of College for Kids, a summer program offering engaging, week-long academic experiences for students ages 11 to 16. College for Kids provides hands-on enrichment opportunities in science, technology, engineering, arts, business, and leadership, all within a supportive college campus environment. Programs run Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Organized by STCC’s Division of Workforce Development, the program introduces students to college-level subjects while encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and skill development. ‘Unlock the Potential of Your Property’

June 23: An informative seminar, “Unlock the Potential of Your Property with ADUs,” will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Lattitude Restaurant, located at 1338 Memorial Ave., West Springfield. The event is hosted by the Realtor Assoc. of Pioneer Valley. The seminar will focus on how accessory dwelling units (ADUs) can fit into one’s future plans, generate rental income, and provide flexible living space. Topics include zoning regulations, financing options, and design considerations. Lenox Job Fair

April 29: The Lenox Chamber of Commerce announced the fourth annual Lenox Job Fair, taking place from 4 to 6 p.m. at Lenox Town Hall, 6 Walker St. This annual event brings together local and regional employers with job seekers from across the Berkshires. The job fair provides an opportunity for candidates to meet with representatives from a broad range of industries — including hospitality, banking, healthcare, nonprofit, and cultural organizations — offering seasonal, parttime, and fulltime opportunities. The job fair is free and open to the public; no registration is required. Attendees are encouraged to bring multiple copies of their résumé and be prepared for onthespot conversations with recruiters. This is an ideal event for students, returning workforce participants, seasonal workers, and anyone exploring new career paths.

 

Quaboag Hills Chamber Open House, Member Showcase

April 29: In December, the Quaboag Hills Chamber of Commerce relocated its office operations to a new rented space at Pathfinder Tech’s Four Corners building at 191 Sykes St. in Palmer. The building is the former Country Bank Four Corners branch and is now home to many of Pathfinder Tech’s Adult Continuing Education programs, as well as weekly meetings by the chamber’s Quaboag Referral Group, which will sponsor an open house and member showcase from 5 to 7 p.m., an event that will also feature music, food, and giveaways. The public is invited to see the former bank building renovations that have taken place and interact with more than a dozen businesses and organizations that will be set up both indoors and outside, promoting their products and services. Those businesses include the Valley’s Classic Hits, Quaboag Referral Group, Behavioral Health Network, Bucha Bros, Cedarbrook Village at Ware, Christopher Heights of Belchertown, Gray Craig Farm, Hardwick Vineyard & Winery, Holiday Inn Express Ludlow, J. Mother’s Day Market

May 2: Wistariahurst Museum will welcome spring with its second annual Mother’s Day Market from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event features a variety of vendors selling locally made products such as art, jewelry, and food. Vendors will be stationed indoors throughout the first floor of the museum. As guests shop and explore, the Brookline Trio will play live music for visitors to enjoy. Guests are welcome inside the Carriage House as well, where they can shop the gift shop, take photos in the carriage, and view the frog circus. During the event, visitors can also participate in a free hands-on clay experience and cup exchange with Pots on Wheels. The Pots on Wheels truck will be parked in Wistariahurst’s driveway, ready for guests to come on board and get creative. During the Mother’s Day Market from 10 a.m. to noon, Wistariahurst’s gardeners will host the first on-site plant sale of the season. Nacho Average Wellness Event

May 7: A group of local eldercare agencies and facilities are sponsoring Nacho Average Wellness from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Heritage Woods, 464 Main St., Agawam. The event is designed to offer caregivers and professionals time to step away from their busy lives, reconnect with themselves, and connect with others. The featured topic of the evening is “Don’t Be a Burnt Taco: How to Come Back to Yourself,” with a focus on conversation around simple, practical ways for caregivers to reduce stress and prevent burnout. Alumni Achievement Award Nominations

Through April 9: BusinessWest is accepting nominations for its 12th annual 40 Under Forty Alumni Achievement Award. Nominations are due by Thursday, April 9. They can be submitted at businesswest.com/40-under-forty/alumniachievementaward. The Alumni Achievement Award finalists will be profiled in BusinessWest, and the winner will be announced at the 40 Under Forty awards gala, presented by PeoplesBank, on Thursday, June 11 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. BusinessWest launched its 40 Under Forty program in 2007 to identify and celebrate rising stars across our region who are excelling in business and involved in the community. Launched in 2015, the Alumni Achievement Award was created to honor the 40 Under Forty honorees who have most impressively continued and built upon their track records of accomplishment.

 

St. Patrick’s Breakfast

March 18: The Greater Holyoke Chamber invites the entire community to its annual St. Patrick’s Breakfast, presented by Witman Properties, PeoplesBank, HG&E, bankESB, and Greenfield Cooperative Bank. The event will take place at 7:30 a.m. at the Log Cabin. First-time Homebuyer Information Session

March 25: Greenfield Cooperative Bank (GCB) will host a complimentary first-time homebuyer information session at the bank’s Shelburne Falls branch community room, located at 33 Bridge St. The event will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and is open to all prospective first-time homebuyers. Led by Missy Tetreault, GCB’s vice president and community engagement mortgage officer, and Kim Gates, mortgage originator, the session is designed to demystify the homebuying process and provide attendees with practical knowledge to confidently navigate their path to homeownership. The session will highlight GCB’s FTHB Achieve and Attain mortgage programs and explain the power of pre-approval. StratAI Series

March 26: Promising “Practical AI Strategies. Smarter Operations. Raise Your Glass 2026

March 26: LightHouse Holyoke will host Raise Your Glass 2026, its annual community celebration and fundraiser, from 7 to 9 p.m. at De la Luz Soundstage, 114 Race St., Holyoke. This year’s event marks a significant milestone: the organization’s evolution into LightWorks Collective, expanding from a single alternative school into a broader ecosystem of education, performing arts, and creative workforce development in downtown Holyoke. Community Dental Day

March 28: The Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) Dental Sciences Department, in partnership with the Valley District Dental Society, will host the eighth annual Community Dental Day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Building 20 at STCC. This free event provides an opportunity for area residents who may not be receiving regular dental care to obtain necessary treatment at no cost. Licensed dentists from the Valley District Dental Society, along with STCC dental hygiene and assisting students, will provide a range of services, including patient education, health screenings, diagnosis, X-rays, and limited treatments such as fillings, extractions, sealants, and assessments of urgent issues. While cleanings will not be provided during the event, patients needing one may schedule a low-cost follow-up visit at STCC’s dental clinic. Community Dental Day is open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, and no insurance is required. Patients can also return to STCC’s dental clinic for affordable follow-up care if needed. March 28: The Westfield Starfires announced that Hall of Fame baseball writer Peter Gammons will serve as host for the upcoming Starfires Hot Stove event featuring legendary pitcher Roger “the Rocket” Clemens. The event will take place at Parenzo Hall (Dever Auditorium) on the campus of Westfield State University starting at 6 p.m., and promises to be an unforgettable evening of baseball stories, insight, and behind-the-scenes conversation with one of the game’s most dominant pitchers. Pickleball Tournament

March 29: Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity (GSHFH) is hosting a high-energy pickleball tournament at the Picklr, 415 East Main St., Westfield, from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., bringing together players of all skill levels for a full day of fun in support of affordable housing in Western Mass. The tournament is a two-player team round robin event, with the day divided into timed sections based on skill level to ensure competitive and enjoyable play for everyone. Registration is required, and tickets cost $50 per person. All proceeds from the event will benefit Greater Springfield Habitat and its mission to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. In addition to tournament play, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets and Habitat merchandise throughout the day. Splash-A-Thon Fundraiser

April 11: Berkshire South Regional Community Center (BSRCC) will host its 16th annual Splash-A-Thon fundraiser beginning at 8 a.m. in its Norris Aquatics Center. The community-wide event supports Berkshire South’s Adaptive Aquatics programs, which provide inclusive swim instruction and water-based therapy for individuals of all ages and abilities. Event participants may sign up to swim laps or choose from two special-edition adaptive swim classes offered throughout the morning: Aqua Thrills (for adults ages 18 and up) at 10 a.m., or Swim Jam (for children ages 0-17 with adaptive needs) at 11 a.m. With the addition of these adaptive classes, the Splash-A-Thon fundraiser is designed to be a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive event. This year’s Splash-A-Thon fundraising goal is $20,000, which will directly support Adaptive Aquatics programming. March 2-8: The Springfield Museums announced a second online auction of low-number Massachusetts license plates featuring Dr. Seuss’s iconic Cat in the Hat. The auction will run from March 2 at 10 a.m. through March 8 at 5 p.m. The Springfield Museums is home to the world’s only museum dedicated to the Springfield native and beloved children’s author (born Theodor Seuss Geisel), with proceeds from the plates supporting the its mission to promote literacy and learning. With just 26 remaining, this might be the final opportunity for Massachusetts residents to own a coveted low-number Dr. Seuss plate. ‘The ABCs of EV Ownership’

March 7: DC Station will host a workshop, “The ABCs of EV Ownership,” from 1 to 2 p.m. at 5 Fulton Ave., Northampton. Attendees will learn all there is to know about making the switch to electric driving. The 45-minute offering will be led by Greg Goff, who oversees EV Base Camp, the education center for DC Station. Goff is an automotive consultant with over a decade of experience with EVs, and he will offer a talk and then answer questions. Topics to be covered include the benefits of going electric; home versus public charging options; understanding charging times and costs; battery care, range, and lifespan; costs; ownership experience; and tax credits, rebates, and other incentives. First Saturdays at the Print Shop

March 7, April 4, May 2: The Print Shop Makerspace in downtown Holyoke invites families, creatives, and curious community members of all ages to explore hands-on art and design through First Saturdays at the Print Shop, a free, monthly workshop series running February through May. Held on the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Print Shop Makerspace, 62 Main St., the series offers welcoming, drop-in workshops that introduce participants to the tools, technology, and creative possibilities of a working print shop and classroom space. Each First Saturday features a different make-and-take activity designed to spark curiosity and build creative confidence. The Zonta International community also celebrates Zonta Rose Day, a time to reflect and give tribute to the women who have empowered us. In this spirit, the Zonta Club of Quaboag Valley announces its Women Making a Difference Award dinner at the Ludlow Country Club. The theme of this year’s International Women’s celebration, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” calls for inclusive legal systems, eliminating discriminatory laws, and addressing structural barriers to justice and opportunity for women and girls. The honorees for 2026 are champions for this theme: Jacqueline Velez, lead organizer for Holyoke’s Neighbor to Neighbor and community project coordinator for Live Well Springfield, drives campaigns for criminal justice reform, climate action, and housing justice. Samantha Hamilton, director of Coalition Building and Community Engagement at the Public Health Institute of Western Massachusetts and co-founder of A Queen’s Narrative, leverages more than 22 years of experience to advance health equity, address environmental and social disparities, and empower women and girls. Marianne Winters, who has forged a career dedicated to ending domestic violence and sexual assault, held executive leadership roles at Jane Doe Inc. and the Rape Crisis Center of Central Massachusetts prior to her nearly 15-year tenure as executive director of Safe Passage. MathAlive! Exhibition at Springfield Science Museum

Through May 3: On Jan. 24, the Springfield Museums opened Math Alive! at the Springfield Science Museum. On view through May 3, the exhibition brings to life all the different types of mathematics at work, whether in design, application, or use, behind the things kids love most — sports, games, design, entertainment, space, and robotics. Math Alive! uses immersive and innovative technologies to create fun experiences that help visitors understand how math is used in countless ways. Highlights include a downhill race in which visitors ride snowboards and a photo stage on which visitors can capture their own image in a 360-degree action photo, in the style made famous in contemporary action movies. Six themed areas featuring a range of high-tech, mechanical, and multi-media interactive experiences provide challenges that use various types of mathematics as tools to help the visitor compete, design, build, optimize, or just play, depending on the activity. Along the way, animated character guides known as the BotZ help visitors tackle the challenges, explaining the math involved, prompting and encouraging answers, and jumping in if visitors get stuck. Visitors can take the controls to master engineer various aspects of a modern city, jump into a ‘binary dance party,’ or program and control Curiosity, NASA’s Mars rover. Through a wide range of unique, interactive experiences, the exhibit takes math from its native form into the applied worlds of design, engineering, technology, and science.

 

MassHire Job Expo

Feb. 3: Hundreds of people are expected to attend MassHire Springfield Career Center’s Job Expo at the Basketball Hall of Fame. Forty to 50 companies are expected to attend the event, which will run from 4 to 7 p.m. Employers will be hiring to fill hundreds of openings. Job seekers will have opportunities available in many different industries, including healthcare, manufacturing, social services, education, and banking. The Job Expo is held in Center Court and is open to the public, providing an opportunity for applicants to meet recruiters face to face. Located at 95 Liberty St., MassHire Springfield Career Center served more than 11,000 job seekers and 1,600 business last fiscal year. It provides people with job search assistance and access to skills training, and its business services include no-cost job postings and recruiting events. Greenfield Winter Carnival

Feb. 6-8: The Greenfield Recreation Department welcomes the community to experience a winter wonderland during the 104th Winter Carnival. With a theme of “Yeti or Not,” this year’s carnival includes an assortment of beloved traditions. On Friday, Feb. 6, ice carvings will take place throughout the day downtown. Attendees can watch as simple ice blocks are transformed into sparkling masterpieces. A map can be found on the Greenfield Recreation Department website. Attendees are encouraged to vote for their favorite ice carving by Sunday, Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. Later in the evening, patrons can enjoy the Greenfield Business Assoc. Downtown Defrost before the Parade of Lights at 6 p.m. and the Beacon Field fireworks at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 7, visitors can participate in a variety of activities, from the annual Cribbage Tournament at the John Zon Community Center to a virtual puzzle contest. There will also be free family activities at 20 Sanderson St. and a free Fire and Ice Show at Greenfield Middle School. The evening concludes with the Glow Party at 5:30 p.m. in the Greenfield Middle School cafeteria. Sunday, Feb. 8 features the Winter Carnival’s various competition events at Beacon Field, including Cookie and Chili Bake-offs, the K-9 Keg Pull, and the Cardboard Sled Contest. Visitors can also enjoy a vintage snowmobile display and sleigh rides around Beacon Field. There are also several activities that will take place throughout the weekend, including a Yeti Hunt and Literary Quotes Walk.

 

‘The Mission-Rich Experience Live’

Feb. 12-13: — Mission-Rich Academy will host its first-ever live intensive, “The Mission-Rich Experience Live,” bringing nonprofit leaders and micro-business owners from across the country to Western Mass. for a two-day, high-touch leadership intensive. Founded by LaTonia Monroe Naylor, a leadership strategist, author, and longtime regional leader, the intensive reflects more than an event — it represents decades of community-centered leadership. The two-day convening is designed to help mission-driven leaders strengthen funding access, build sustainable systems, and lead with clarity — particularly during a time of uncertainty. Attendance is intentionally limited to preserve depth of training, with participants leaving with proven frameworks, strategic clarity, and a practical plan they can begin implementing immediately. March 6: The Springfield Regional Chamber announced that Susan Collins, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, will serve as the keynote speaker for Outlook 2026, taking place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. MGM Springfield Tree Lighting

Nov. 28: MGM Springfield will usher in the holiday season with its annual tree lighting ceremony, marking the opening of Holiday Winter Wonderland on Armory Square, featuring the city’s only outdoor skating rink. Festivities kick off at 5:15 p.m. with special appearances by the New England Patriots cheerleaders, Pat the Patriot, Red Sox mascot Wally, the Springfield Thunderbirds’ own Boomer, and Santa Claus himself. At 5:30 p.m., MGM Springfield will welcome Westfield native and The Voice semifinalist Madison Curbelo as she performs holiday favorites from the Armory Square Stage. Visitors can enjoy a hot chocolate or festive adult beverages available in our outdoor Lion’s Den winter cabin, located next to the skating rink. Local favorite Jeannie’s Weenies will be serving up its signature all-beef hot dogs with fresh toppings, plant-based options, and sweets. A brief welcome program will begin at 6 p.m., led by the MGM Springfield team and Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The official tree lighting and grand opening of the skating rink will immediately follow. Throughout the season, MGM Springfield invites guests to enjoy a festive experience at Armory Square, including a coordinated holiday tree light and music show with magical snow, that will be on display every hour, on the hour, from 2 to 10 p.m., seven days a week. This season, the ice skating rink will remain open until Jan. 4, 2026. Tickets for the ice rink can be purchased in person.

 

Holiday Marketplace, Festival of Wreaths

Dec. 5-7: A holiday tradition continues at Berkshire Botanical Garden (BBG) with Holiday Marketplace, featuring a preview party and Gallery of Wreaths. The festivities begin Dec. 5 in BBG’s Center House from 5 to 7 p.m. The party includes early wreath-buying opportunities, live music, hors d’oeuvres and a raw bar, and festive libations. This is a pre-registered event. Admission is $75 for members and $100 for non-members. ‘Colors of Grief’ Art Exhibit

Through Nov. 30: Rick’s Place invites the community to join in honoring Children’s Grief Awareness Month through “Colors of Grief: Shades of Love and Loss,” an inspiring art exhibit featuring original works created by youth and adult participants of Rick’s Place. The exhibit is on display at the William Blizard Art Gallery in Blake Hall at Springfield College throughout the month of November, daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This meaningful collection of artwork explores how grief, love, and memory shape our lives after loss. Each piece offers a personal reflection — an intimate expression of what it means to remember, to miss, and to move forward. The title, “Shades of Love and Loss,” reflects the many ways grief can be uniquely experienced, with each artwork revealing the individual journey and creative expression of its artist. Rick’s Place, a nonprofit organization based in Wilbraham, provides free peer grief support programs to children, teens, and families across Western Mass. and Northern Conn. With more than 5,000 children in Hampden County having experienced the death of a parent or sibling, Rick’s Place continues to be a compassionate space where families find understanding, connection, and hope.

MCLA Constitution and Citizenship Day Lecture

Sept. 17: MCLA will host the annual Constitution and Citizenship Day with a presentation for students and community members at 4 p.m. in Murdock Hall, Room 218. The presentation, “Understanding the Electoral College: Insights into 2024’s Presidential Election,” will be led by MCLA Associate Professor of Political Science Samantha Pettey. The lecture is free and open to the public. Pettey will explore the historical origins and current controversies of the Electoral College, including the disparity between the popular vote and electoral outcomes and the influence of swing states. It will also cover best practices for interpreting polling data to help students and attendees critically analyze ‘hot-take’ headlines. A Q&A session addressing these topics and others will follow the presentation. This lecture is designed to empower students of democracy with the knowledge to understand and influence elections. Pettey has been interested in politics from a young age and has worked in the History and Political Science Department at MCLA since 2016. She teaches a range of courses on American government but is most passionate about teaching and researching Congress, state and local politics, and women in politics. Her current research focuses broadly on female candidates. She is particularly interested in the impact institutional features and demographic characteristics have on state-level candidate emergence and success.

 

Paragus Firehouse Cook Off

Sept. 17: Polar Park in Worcester will host the third annual Paragus Firehouse Cook Off. Last year, the event, presented by Paragus I.T., drew more than 300 people to Polar Park and raised $20,000 for the Worcester Firefighters 6K charity. This year, the event will also raise funds for DetecTogether, a nonprofit that promotes early cancer detection in young adults, first responders, and workplace employees. For the Paragus Firehouse Cook Off, firehouses from around the city create dishes to be judged by a panel of local business leaders. This year’s judges will be Niche Hospitality President Michael Covino, Worcester Red Sox Coordinator of Public and Community Relations Katie Siegle, Worcester Wares founder Jessica Walsh, and Fontaine Bros. CEO Dave Fontaine. In addition to the Judge’s Prize, there is a People’s Choice Prize based on a vote taken among event attendees. The event will be hosted by Mike Hsu and Radio Worcester’s Hank Stolz. Harpoon Brewery will hold a free beer tasting for attendees. There will also be pies donated by Table Talk and seltzer donated by Polar Beverages. The event begins at 5 p.m. Tickets cost $30 for the general public and $25 for firefighters and their families, with children under 10 admitted free. Amherst BID Block Party

Sept. 19: The Amherst Business Improvement District (BID) announced its 11th annual block party will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. on North Pleasant Street in downtown Amherst. Now in its second year, Friends on a Mission started with a trio of friends — Bob Perry, Walter Tomala, and the late Jenn Schimmel — who set out to spend time together while giving back to the community. Their inaugural event held last fall raised more than $38,000 for Make-A-Wish of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Cruise for Critters

Sept. 21: The engines are revving for the much-anticipated Cruise for Critters at Westview Farms Creamery. Now in its 12th year, this car show, presented by Al Widlan, owner of Service Connection, is set to once again make a meaningful impact on the lives of pets in need at Second Chance Animal Services. Widlan has championed this event for over a decade, rallying car enthusiasts and compassionate hearts alike to come together for a worthy cause. This year’s Cruise for Critters promises an array of fall-themed activities for attendees of all ages. A vendor fair will offer unique items of all kinds, and the Halloween Barktacular kids’ games will be back, thanks to dedicated Second Chance volunteers. The festivities are set to kick off at 10 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m., featuring food, ice cream, and an assortment of fall attractions that Westview Farms Creamery is known for, from pumpkin picking to navigating through a corn maze. The event will also include live music by the Barberic Band, a raffle, and more. Healthcare Heroes Nominations

Through July 29: In the spring of 2017, BusinessWest and its sister publication, the Healthcare News, created a new and exciting recognition program called Healthcare Heroes. It was launched with the theory that there are heroes working across this region’s wide, deep, and all-important healthcare sector, and that there was no shortage of fascinating stories to tell and individuals and groups to honor. That theory has certainly been validated. But there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of heroes whose stories we still need to tell. And that’s where you come in. Art Exhibit Submissions

Through Aug. 31: The Taber Art Gallery at Holyoke Community College (HCC), in partnership with the college’s Thrive Student Resource Center, is seeking submissions from area artists for an exhibit titled “THRIVE: Beyond Surviving.” The exhibit will run from Oct. 31 to Dec. 20. Artists are encouraged to enter work that considers the systemic, communal, and/or individual obstacles and barriers to survival; what surviving means; how we as humans can continue to dream, push, and hope for more than the minimum; and the struggle of exhaustion versus the ability to rest. Submissions are due by Aug. 31.

 

Big Brothers Big Sisters Point 5K Fundraiser

July 18: The Franklin County Fairgrounds, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western Massachusetts (BBBSWM) will host its annual Point 5K fundraiser from 4 to 8 p.m. with a rodeo-themed twist. Whip City Animal Sanctuary Annual Golf Tournament

July 27: Whip City Animal Sanctuary will host its fourth annual golf tournament at St. Anne Country Club in Feeding Hills. “This is our biggest fundraising event of the year, and we’re working toward expanding our facilities in the near future. We’re looking for players and sponsors of all levels to come join the fun and support the sanctuary this year,” said Sonia Henderson, head of off-site fundraising for the sanctuary. Whip City Animal Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides long-term care for more than 100 abandoned, rescued, and surrendered farm animals. The sanctuary is open for public visiting hours on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.

 

Party for a Purpose

Sept. 19: With the goal of making sure Square One’s children have a new, state-of-the-art, outdoor learning and playspace, Friends on a Mission will host its annual Party for a Purpose to raise funds for the playground project at Square One’s Tommie Johnson Child & Family Center in Springfield. Now in its second year, Friends on a Mission started with a trio of friends — Bob Perry, Walter Tomala, and the late Jenn Schimmel — who set out to spend time together while giving back to the community. Their inaugural event held last fall raised more than $38,000 for Make-A-Wish of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Christmas by Candlelight

Through Dec. 30: Christmas by Candlelight at Old Sturbridge Village is now open select Fridays, Saturday, and Sundays through Dec. 30. Unique, Village-made holiday items are available at the Miner Grant Store during the event, as well as the Ox & Yoke Mercantile, which opens daily at 10 a.m. and does not require admission to the Village. Visitors who would like to give the gift of something handmade can learn about crafts made throughout the Village, purchase craft kits for gift giving, or try their skill at hand-dipping candles. Attendees will find themselves enchanted as they step back in time to celebrate Christmas in New England in the 19th century. They can enter Village households to watch traditional craft-making demonstrations; stroll through the Christmas Tree Trail, featuring over 80 cut trees; and take in 4,000 candles and lanterns and more than 2,000 yards of garland dressing up the Village in its holiday finest. Bright Nights

Through Jan. 1: The 29th season of Bright Nights at Forest Park will be lit every night from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and holidays, which include Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. Tickets are available at brightnights.org. Over the past 29 years, a lot has changed, but many iconic displays have stayed the same. The Cat in the Hat still waves at the entrance to Seuss Land as he has been doing since 1995. The deer in Winter Woods bound across the road. Toy Land is still a storied land for children to dream of living in. Santa’s Magical Forest continues to grow with activities, attractions, and Santa himself, who will be in residency through Christmas Eve. He has a cozy cottage to welcome visitors, listen to holiday wish lists, and pose for photos, whether visitors take their own or purchase a photo package.

 

40 Under Forty Nominations

Through Feb. 16: BusinessWest is currently accepting nominations for the 40 Under Forty class of 2023. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Feb. 16. Launched in 2007, the program recognizes rising stars in the four counties of Western Mass. Red Sox Winter Weekend

Jan. 19-20: Red Sox Winter Weekend will take place at MGM Springfield and its neighboring facility, the MassMutual Center. The event will include a welcome and introduction of participating Red Sox players and roundtable discussions on a variety of baseball topics, as well as autographs and photos. Annual Golf Tournament

Benefit Bike Ride

June 11: Area residents are invited to pedal for a great cause and help raise donations for Cancer House of Hope. A ride is scheduled on the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail (rain date is June 12). MOSSO Concerts

June 23/July 21: MOSSO, the Musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, have announced details of their upcoming summer concerts at Symphony Hall. MOSSO will celebrate the music of Stephen Sondheim and John Williams. These concerts mark the first time in almost 20 years that the musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra have performed summer concerts in Springfield. On June 23, MOSSO celebrates the music of the late, legendary Broadway composer and lyricist, Stephen Sondheim, who penned the words and music to A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, and Into the Woods. Conductor Tim Stella will lead the program, joined by Broadway stars Hugh Panaro and Lisa Vroman. Also appearing are Ray Hardman and Kathleen Callahan-Hardman. Stella conducted The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, and before that, Jesus Christ Superstar, A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum, Guys and Dolls, The Most Happy Fella, Hello Dolly!, and Legs Diamond. He served as vocal coach to Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler, who portrayed Christine and the Phantom respectively, in the movie version of Phantom. Stella is former resident music director of Goodspeed Musicals, and a conductor at Radio City Music Hall. Panaro is best known for having played the role of the Phantom in Broadway’s The Phantom of the Opera more than 2,000 times. On July 21, Maestro Kevin Rhodes returns to Springfield to conduct a MOSSO benefit concert, with a program of light classics and music of renowned composer John Williams, whose works include Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Schindler’s List. Rhodes will be joined by guest soloist, violinist Yevgeny Kutik, whose two prior solo appearances in Springfield were met with great acclaim. Rhodes served as music director and conductor of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra for 20 seasons, until the SSO paused performances in 2020. He continues to serve as music director and conductor of the Traverse Symphony in Michigan, and as principal conductor of Boston’s Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra. In March 2021, Maestro Rhodes made his debut with the Orchestra of the Rome Opera in Italy, recording a live radio broadcast of Maurice Jarre’s score to Roland Petit’s ballet, Notre Dame de Paris. He will conduct productions of Giselle and La Bayadère for their 2022-23 season. Kutik, a native of Minsk, Belarus, immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of five, with the help of the Jewish Federations of North America. His 2014 album, Music from the Suitcase: A Collection of Russian Miniatures (Marquis Classics), features music he found in his family’s suitcase after immigrating to the United States from the Soviet Union in 1990. In 2021, Kutik launched Finding Home: Music from the Suitcase in Concert. Kutik’s additional releases on Marquis include his most recent album, The Death of Juliet and Other Tales.
