• Lauren Foley, who started her journey with accounting at MBK in 2020, has been promoted to supervisor. She focuses on commercial and individual tax returns as well as compilation and review engagements. She graduated from UMass Lowell with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in accounting. She is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and MassCPA.

• Joanne Haley has been promoted to supervisor in the Audit and Accounting department. She has been practicing public accounting since 1987, specializing in 401(k) audits and medical practices. She has extensive experience across various accounting domains, including reviews, compilations, financial statement preparation, corporate and partnership tax returns, and nonprofit audits. She holds a bachelor’s degree in management from Westfield State University. She is also a member of AICPA and MassCPA.

• Keara King, who began her career with MBK as a tax intern in January 2020, has been promoted to supervisor in the Taxation department. She continues to look forward to overseeing the tax internship training program, guiding clients through year-round tax planning, and ensuring they are prepared for filing deadlines. She enjoys mentoring students and associates and is a leader in the firm for various community service and corporate culture initiatives. She received her bachelor’s degree in accounting and sports management from Elms College. She is also a member of AICPA and MassCPA.

• Karen Korpinen, CPA, has been promoted to supervisor in the Audit and Accounting department. She has been practicing public accounting at MBK since 2022 and brings a wealth of experience from her tenure on the flip side of the desk. Her background is diverse, encompassing various roles within not-for-profit organizations, municipalities, and higher education. She also holds master’s degrees in both business administration and accounting, equipping her with a broad understanding of the financial landscape. She is also a member of AICPA and MassCPA.

• Mia McDonald, CPA, has been promoted to supervisor in the Audit and Accounting department. Her skillset is diverse, with strong focuses on engagements in not-for-profit, employee benefit plans, manufacturing, and wholesale and distribution industries. She is also the leader of the Municipal Utility Audit division. She became a CPA in 2025 and holds a bachelor’s degrees in economics and business management with a minor in mathematics and a concentration in accounting. She also holds a master’s degree in accounting from Westfield State University. As one of the two firm ambassadors for MassCPA, she remains engaged with the broader accounting community, staying updated on industry developments and best practices.

Country Bank announced the addition of two commercial banking professionals to its team: Mike Oleksak as first vice president, commercial banking team leader – West Region, and Rob Totaro as vice president, relationship manager – East Region. Oleksak will be based in the Springfield Business Office at Tower Square, where he will manage a team of commercial lenders, as well as a portfolio of commercial clients, and collaborate with the team to drive new business development and broaden the bank’s reach across Western Mass. With more than 20 years of experience in commercial and business banking, Oleksak brings extensive expertise to Country Bank. Most recently, he served as senior vice president and commercial team leader at bankESB. His previous roles include positions of increasing responsibility at CoBank, United Bank, and Westfield Bank. He earned both his bachelor’s degree and his MBA from Southern New Hampshire University. He is also deeply involved in the community, serving as board chair of the West Springfield Boys & Girls Club, 2nd vice chair of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western Massachusetts, and board member of Hartsprings Foundation and Easthampton Neighbors Inc. Meanwhile, Totaro will manage a portfolio of commercial clients, identify new prospects, and support the bank’s growth and market presence throughout the East Region. He is based in the Business Office at 315 Main St., Worcester. He brings more than 26 years of banking experience. He began his career in retail banking at Citizens Bank and, most recently, served as vice president of commercial lending at Webster Five, where he worked for the past 19 years. Active in the community, Totaro previously served with the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club, and currently co-chairs the Learning First Foundation, a nonprofit educational organization associated with the Learning First Charter School. He also graduated from Leadership Worcester in 2020. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Worcester State University and an MBA from Nichols College. He is currently enrolled at the ABA Stonier Graduate School of Banking (class of 2027). Country Bank also announced the appointment of Devan Summers as retail banking officer the Tower Square office. Bringing more than 14 years of experience in retail banking, management, and community development, he will lead day-to-day operations of the Springfield banking center, support customers with personalized financial solutions, and further strengthen Country Bank’s long-standing relationships throughout the city of Springfield. Summers has served in nearly every role within branch banking throughout his career, from customer service to branch management and senior leadership. His experience includes leading high-performing teams, revitalizing branch performance across competitive markets, and overseeing retail operations and community engagement initiatives.

Berkshire Community Land Trust (BCLT) announced the promotion of Operations Director Beth Carlson to the newly created position of executive director. Today, the trust holds more than 130 acres in community trust, providing homeownership opportunities to 23 families and two local nonprofits with residential and office facilities. Nearly 100 acres of that land are productive farmland supporting two thriving agricultural businesses that strengthen our local food system and economy. Carlson, a partner in Silo Media, initially got involved with BCLT and the Farmsteads for Farmers initiative through events, video, and graphics projects. She became campaign manager for Farmsteads for Farmers in 2023 and became director of Operations in 2024. On Nov. 1, she began full-time in the new executive director role. She served as president of the Dewey Memorial Hall board until recently and is credited with leading the team that brought the organization through COVID and a significant revival. She is a founding board member of the W.E.B. Du Bois Center for Freedom and Democracy. Her Silo Media projects were mostly for nonprofits and involved fundraising campaigns, social media, and consulting.

Tony Maroulis has been appointed executive director, Economic Development at UMass Amherst, effective Feb. 3. He will report to Natalie Blais, associate vice chancellor for Government Relations. Since September, Maroulis has been part of the campus’s Economic Development Initiative (EDI) leadership team with Carl Rust, assistant vice chancellor for Corporate Engagement, and Sundar Krishnamurty, vice provost for Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Creativity. In his new role, Maroulis will continue working closely with the EDI leadership, senior campus leaders, and campus stakeholders to shape and coordinate initiatives that strengthen the university’s economic impact, deepen industry and community partnerships, and support local, regional, and statewide priorities as part of the 2024-34 UMass Strategic Plan. A respected leader in regional economic development, tourism, and the arts, Maroulis has been executive director of Community and Strategic Initiatives since 2021. From 2008 to 2014, he was director of the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce before joining UMass, where he served as executive director of External Relations and University Events.

Morgan Stanley announced that John Pappas, a a certified financial planner, senior vice president, and financial advisor in its Wealth Management office in Springfield, has been named to the firm’s prestigious Century Club, an elite group composed of the firm’s top financial advisors. The appointment recognizes his consistent creativity and excellence in providing a wide range of investment products and wealth management services to his clients.

Pappas, who has been with Morgan Stanley Wealth Management since 2015, holds a bachelor’s degree in managerial economics from Allegheny College and an MBA in finance from the Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst.

The board of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) voted to appoint Ben Downing as its next CEO. Downing is currently chief growth officer at the Engine, a nonprofit incubator and accelerator built by MIT to support climate tech, biotech, and advanced infrastructure startups. He also previously served as a state senator representing the Berkshires and as Senate chair of the Joint Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy Committee. As chief growth officer at the Engine, Downing working hands-on with climate tech and biotech startups. In that capacity, he has supported, advised, and worked with some of the most promising and impactful teams from Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Form Energy, VEIR, Sublime Systems, Lydian Labs, Atlantic Quantum, Vaxess, Foundation Alloy, Cellino Bio, Robigo, and many more. He helped them secure hundreds of millions in federal awards, build significant connections, and make significant investments across Massachusetts. Prior to this role, he was vice president of New Market Development for Nexamp, a clean energy company focused on community solar and lowering customer utility bills. He led strategic expansion working nationally with a specific focus in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic.

The Realtor Assoc. of Pioneer Valley (RAPV) celebrated the outstanding achievements of its members at its annual Excellence Awards Gala, held Feb. 12 at Wyckoff Country Club. The Gala’s highest honors were presented to Carrie Blair of Keller Williams Pioneer Valley, 2025 Realtor of the Year; and Margaret Bulatewicz of Liberty Bank, 2025 Affiliate of the Year. Since 2009, Blair has been an active RAPV member, contributing to the finance, RAPV Spring Conference, and professional development committees. She became a director on the RAPV board in 2023, providing leadership and guidance to the organization. Her support of fellow Realtors and mentorship of peers demonstrates her dedication to the industry and community, making her a valuable asset to the real estate profession. Bulatewicz actively serves on RAPV’s community service committee and donates to charitable causes. She also volunteers at the Ludlow Senior Center and supports the local nonprofit For the Love of Good Foundation, demonstrating a deep commitment to improving her community. The newly introduced Good Neighbor Award, recognizing outstanding dedication to community service, was given to Jennifer Tetreault of BHHS Realty Professionals. This year’s RAPV Hall of Fame inductees are Peter Davies (posthumously), Dorothy “Dot” Lortie of Landmark Realtors and Dot Lortie Realty, and Don Thompson of NextHome Elite Realty. Murphy is a retired attorney with more than 30 years at the Boston law firm Foley Hoag, after which he served as legal and administrative counsel at Amherst College, his alma mater. He has served on the board of directors or board of trustees of numerous nonprofit organizations, including New England Public Media, Baystate Health, and the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts.

Braman Termite & Pest Elimination announced that Natasha Wright, the company’s entomologist and technical director, has been named the 2026 Women of Excellence Award recipient by the New England Pest Management Assoc. (NEPMA). This international honor recognizes women who advance the pest management industry every day. The award celebrates leaders who have made notable contributions to the development and growth of the profession, their businesses, and other women in the industry. She was honored at an award dinner on Wednesday, March 4 in Marlborough, and recognized at PestWorld later this year. Wright earned her bachelor’s degree in entomology from the University of Florida and her master’s degree in entomology from the University of Arkansas. She is also a board-certified entomologist through the Entomological Society of America. At Braman, she plays a critical role in maintaining the company’s long-standing commitment to training and scientific excellence. She trains new and veteran technicians on pest biology, behavior, and identification; prepares them for state licensing exams; and provides continuing education credits. She also educates clients and the public on pest prevention and control strategies. Her expertise extends beyond the classroom.

The Springfield Symphony Orchestra (SSO) announced the 11 recipients of its fourth Annual Fearless Women Awards, which honor local women who embody courage, resilience, and empowerment. A record 80 nominations were received for this year’s Fearless Women Awards. Women were nominated by their peers in several categories. The 11 recipients were recognized on stage at the SSO’s performance on March 14, “Gershwin and A Woman’s Voice.” They include Claudia Quintero, director of the Central West Justice Center, nominated in the Advocacy category; Maeliz Colon, project manager at Robert W. Donna Haghighat, CEO of the Women’s Fund of Western Massachusetts, has announced her plans to retire, effective June 30. Under Haghighat’s leadership, beginning in 2017, the Women’s Fund developed innovative programs, sought out effective partnerships, increased grantmaking, grew its corporate and individual donations, and focused on racial equity and trust-based philanthropy. She was also integral in the launch of the Young Women’s Initiative for girls and young women of color in Springfield and the Greater Springfield Women’s Economic Security Hub. Haghighat has facilitated the monthly meetings of the Women Heads of Nonprofits group in Western Mass., which the Women’s Fund hosts, and has served on the state’s Community Reinvestment Fund Advisory Board and the advisory board of the Center for Social Justice at Western New England School of Law. She was appointed by Gov. Maura Healey to the Massachusetts Cultural Council this year and is a board member for WAM Theatre in the Berkshires.

Professional Drywall Construction Inc. (PDC) announced that Timothy Craw has joined the company as vice president of Business Development and Labor Relations. With 45 years of construction experience in nearly every industry segment, Craw will be responsible for expanding the company’s footprint in all areas of the Atlantic states. Most recently, Craw was a union business agent and building trades president. In his various positions over the years, he has developed and maintained relationships with union and non-union contracts for business development and market expansion, recruited and represented union journeyman and apprentice carpenters in collective-bargaining negotiations, mediated contract conflicts, and monitored federal and state public construction projects during the planning, design, and bidding processes. Craw received the Carpenters Union Local 108 Steward of the Year Award in 2001 and the BCBCTC Edward M. Kennedy Award in 2016. He is a member of the International Foundation of Employee Benefits Plans and the Assoc. for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology. A graduate of the U.S. Army Engineer School, he served six years as a sergeant in the U.S. Army.

Florence Bank has promoted Andre Motulski to the role of vice president/controller. Motulski joined the bank’s team as assistant vice president/controller in September 2019. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Central Connecticut State University and is a Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.-commissioned risk-management examiner. In his new role, which he assumed in December, he is responsible for managing financial records, ensuring regulatory compliance, and assessing risks associated with lending and investment activities. Motulski is involved in the community, serving on the finance committee for Hampshire Regional YMCA in Northampton.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western Massachusetts (BBBSWM) announced that Chris Thompson has been selected as the nonprofit’s chief growth officer. In this role, Thompson will be responsible for strengthening the newly merged agency’s relationship with the communities of Berkshire, Franklin, and Hampden Counties. Thompson was honored with the BusinessWest 40 Under Forty award in 2009 and is active in the local community. He currently sits on the board of Arrha Credit Union and is a former commissioner for the Western Massachusetts Sports Commission and West Springfield’s Parks and Recreation Commission. As co-founder and owner of the Westfield Starfires of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, Thompson brings a wealth of experience to his new role in the areas of advocacy, community outreach, business development, and external relations. He will lead BBBSWM’s growth efforts in Berkshire and Franklin counties. Previously, Thompson served on the BBBS of Hampden County board of directors between 2014 and 2021. He brings with him more than 20 years of experience developing marketing partnerships and generating revenue for iconic Western Mass. brands, such as the Springfield Falcons hockey team, where he developed a comprehensive corporate partnership program, and where he led the launch of the Springfield Thunderbirds hockey club, serving as senior vice president of Sales & Strategy.

Little received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Mississippi State University. MassMutual announced the appointment of Cindy Ryan to head of Human Resources. Ryan, who has more than two decades of HR leadership experience, will oversee and advance MassMutual’s people strategy, aligned with the company’s purpose, priorities, and aspirations. In this role, Ryan assumes oversight of MassMutual’s HR organization, which includes talent acquisition and management; total rewards; HR operations; employee relations; learning and development; and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). She will be responsible for continuing to evolve the company’s flexible, inclusive culture, supporting the holistic well-being and growth of MassMutual’s employees and attracting and retaining a talented, diverse workforce. Ryan joins MassMutual after spending nearly 25 years in various leadership roles of growing responsibility at Cigna, where she most recently served as the company’s chief Human Resources officer (CHRO). In this role, she led Cigna’s worldwide enterprise talent strategy and pandemic response, built its award-winning DEI approach, and enriched its engaged culture. Prior to her CHRO role, she served as senior vice president of HR for Cigna’s U.S. business lines, where she was responsible for talent-management strategies, employee engagement, and leadership effectiveness for the company’s health, life, and disability services lines as well as serving as the company’s chief talent officer, overseeing recruiting, learning, leadership development, and employee relations worldwide.

Laurel Carpenter, associate professor of Environmental Science at Holyoke Community College (HCC), has been awarded a national fellowship focusing on STEM education at community colleges. The fellowship, from the Community College Presidents’ Initiative in STEM (CCPI-STEM), is intended for community-college faculty and administrators pursuing graduate degrees and conducting research related to STEM education and workforce development. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. Carpenter is part of a cohort of just seven CCPI-STEM fellows for 2024-25 and the only one from a college in the Northeast. Fellows are selected from a national pool of applicants, who are evaluated based on their education, STEM experience, leadership potential, community engagement, and research. A 2012 graduate of HCC, Carpenter is a wildlife biologist, chair of the HCC Environmental Studies department, co-coordinator of the HCC STEM Scholars program, and a graduate student at UMass Amherst, where she is pursuing a doctorate in education. CCPI-STEM fellows receive a $5,000 honorarium each year for two years to support their graduate studies. They also participate in professional-development activities and are paired with a professional mentor.

Ute DeFarlo

Ute DeFarlo has been appointed director of Development by Shakespeare & Company, a nonprofit theater performance, education, and actor-training organization based in the Berkshires. In her position, DeFarlo is responsible for supporting Shakespeare & Company’s mission and vision through the development of new and expanded income streams, cultivation of the company’s donors and board of trustees, and various engagements with constituents in the Berkshire County community. Most recently, she served as director of Development for the Mount, Edith Wharton’s home, in Lenox and as Development officer at the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge. Her appointment marks her return to Shakespeare & Company’s Development team, which she first joined in 2004, serving as director from 2009 to 2015. DeFarlo holds a master’s degree in English and Russian language interpretation from the University of Mainz, Germany, and attended Georgetown University on a one-year Fulbright scholarship.

O’Dell Women’s Center, Springfield’s first nonprofit women’s center, appointed Margaret Tantillo as its executive director. In her previous position as executive director of Dress for Success Western Massachusetts, Tantillo directed five distinct programs designed specifically for low-income women that resulted in hundreds of women finding gainful employment. These programs included workforce development, mentorship programming, and trainings in financial literacy, digital literacy, and dressing for the workplace. Toward the end of her tenure, she relocated Dress for Success Western Massachusetts to 45 Lyman St. as the anchor institution of the O’Dell Women’s Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization that offers low- and no-cost residency spaces to nonprofits that support its mission. Tantillo started her career working for the Girl Scouts. During her 13-year career with that organization, she rose through the ranks, started the first Girl Scout Advocacy Day at the Capitol in Hartford, Conn., and served in a senior leadership position, transitioning five independent nonprofits into one statewide organization with more than 65,000 members. Tantillo’s volunteer leadership roles in Springfield include serving on the core economic mobility hub of the Women’s Fund of Western Massachusetts and the coordinating committee of the Alliance for Digital Equity, and as a member of the core partners of Springfield WORKS. She earned her undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and her master’s degree from Springfield College.

Rivers was recognized in January by Sentry Insurance for his 2023 production and flown to Maui to be an honorary observer at the Sentry Tournament of Champions at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, where he walked ‘inside the ropes’ with Jordan Speith, Scottie Scheffler, and Victor Hovland. Rivers has coached basketball, soccer, and baseball in Belchertown throughout the years. He and his family are strong supporters of St. Jude Hospital.

Florence Bank promoted Candace Pereira to the role of vice president, commercial lender. Since 2018, she has worked at Florence Bank as assistant vice president, commercial portfolio manager in the Commercial Lending department. In her new role, she will concentrate on commercial and industrial lending, as well as lending to women-owned businesses. Pereira holds an associate degree in finance from Springfield Technical Community College and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst. She is currently pursuing an MBA from Isenberg as well. She began her career in banking in 2003 and has held various roles at mutually held and stockholder-owned banks in Western Mass., in both residential and commercial lending. Recently named an ambassador for the Springfield Regional Chamber, Pereira is also a member of the BusinessWest 40 Under Forty class of 2017, and she attended the Springfield Leadership Institute. She has served on various local boards over the last several years and has also volunteered as an athletic coach in East Longmeadow, where her daughter is a student.

Dennis Gober, a longtime executive in hospital management, has been named chief operating officer of MiraVista Behavioral Health Center. Gober served previously as CEO in Oklahoma of Cedar Ridge Behavioral Hospital, whose campus in Oklahoma City provides inpatient psychiatric and residential services to children and adolescents, and its Bethany campus, which serves the mental-health needs of adults. Cedar Ridge is part of Universal Health Services, one of the largest providers of hospital and healthcare services in the country. Gober, who holds a master’s degree in community counseling, has held several other senior-level positions, CEO for Acadia Healthcare’s Rolling Hills Hospital in Ada, Okla., which provides mental-health and substance-use services for adolescents, adults, and seniors, and division director of community-based youth services for the state of Oklahoma. As a licensed behavioral practioner, Gober also served as the Director of the Community Works’ Norman Academy Day Treatment Program leading treatment teams, and providing individual, group, and family therapy. He received a master of education degree in community counseling and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Central Oklahoma.

Martin began working for BFAIR in 2014 as a direct-care professional at the agency’s Day Habilitation program located in North Adams. In 2020, she was promoted to case manager for the Community Based Day Services (CBDS) program and later to the Day Habilitation program in the same role. In her new role, Martin is responsible for the everyday operation of the Day Habilitation program, which is designed to support members and their unique needs to increase independence and socialization, helping them participate as active and fully integrated members of their community.

UMass Amherst Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy, under whose leadership the commonwealth’s flagship campus experienced a decade of unprecedented success and momentum, has announced that he will retire at the end of June 2023. Subbaswamy arrived in Amherst in July 2012, and during his tenure the campus has excelled in a wide range of key areas, including attracting growing numbers of diverse, high-achieving students, steadily improving graduation rates, and conducting cutting-edge research with real-world impact. “It has been a privilege to serve as chancellor of this great university,” said Subbaswamy. “I will forever treasure the support and friendship of the faculty, staff, students and alumni whom I’ve come to know over the past decade and am grateful for all that we have accomplished together. Robert Manning, chair of the UMass Board of Trustees, has named UMass Trustee and UMass Amherst alumnus Victor Woodridge as chair of the search committee that will be appointed to identify candidates to be the next UMass Amherst chancellor. Under Subbaswamy’s leadership, the university has played a pivotal and unique role in educating the commonwealth. UMass Amherst alone enrolls more first-year students from Massachusetts than do the commonwealth’s top eight private universities combined. In addition, UMass Amherst awards more undergraduate STEM degrees than any other college or university in Massachusetts, public or private. Meanwhile, the university’s research enterprise is driving innovative solutions to the world’s greatest challenges and boosting the state’s economy. In FY 2021, UMass Amherst totaled $213 million in research expenditures, and it ranked first among public universities in New England in National Science Foundation grant awards. UMass Amherst recently secured major investments in computer science, fueling the Massachusetts tech economy. An $18 million naming gift will endow the Robert and Donna Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences. A state investment of $75 million—along with $30 million from the Amherst campus—will enhance and expand the college’s facilities, enabling accelerated enrollment growth. The university is also playing a lead role to help address the commonwealth’s pressing health care needs supported by the largest gift in UMass Amherst history to the Marieb College of Nursing. The Board of Trustees at Amherst College announced Wednesday that Michael Elliott, a 1992 graduate, has been named the next president of the institution. He will succeed Carolyn ‘Biddy’ Martin, who announced last year that she would retire from the presidency but continue teaching at the college. He is expected to begin work August 1. Elliott has been the chief academic and executive officer of Emory College of Arts and Science in Atlanta since 2016. He earned a doctorate in English and comparative literature at Columbia University in 1998. His bachelor’s degree from Amherst consisted of a dual major in Russian and English.

Kevin Conway, whose IT expertise spans both domestic and global markets, has been named Senior Vice President & Chief Information & Digital Officer (SVP/CIDO) of Baystate Health. His appointment becomes effective June 27.

Conway, a strategic executive with more than 25 years of success in executive leadership, strategic planning, and consulting within large academic multi-facility healthcare IT systems, most recently served as client executive for Tegria Services Group, overseeing the clinical and digital transformation initiative for Northern Ireland. In his role, he was responsible for strategic direction and leadership of Epic Solutions deployment as part of the overall digital health strategy for acute, community, mental health, and social care services. Previously, Conway held the role of Chief Information Officer at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in Pittsburgh, Pa., where he managed all facets of IT operations of clinical and essential service departments at UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Shadyside, and UPMC Mercy & UPMC Magee-Womens Hospitals. He also served as VP of IT Advisory Services, chief information officer, and director of IT at UPMC.

Conway received his BA in Business Administration Health Management Systems from Robert Morris University. In his new role at Baystate Health, Conway will be a key senior executive responsible for the health system’s information and technology systems. His work will include system interoperability and optimization of IT systems, transformation of business processes, human-centered design, enhancements of patient-centered technologies, and focused work on cyber and information security.

Five University of Massachusetts faculty have been awarded the 2022 Manning Prize for Excellence in Teaching for their exemplary dedication to students and the university. The faculty members — one from each UMass campus — will receive $10,000 awards in recognition of their commitment to academic excellence. UMass Lowell alumni Rob and Donna Manning established the Manning Prize in 2016 to honor UMass professors who excel in teaching and service. With the selection of this year’s honorees, 35 UMass faculty members now have the distinct honor of being Manning Prize recipients. The winner from UMass Amherst is Lorraine Cordeiro, PhD, director of the Center for Research on Families and associate professor of Nutrition, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Cordeiro is a community-engaged scholar who describes herself as “an educator, a scientist, a first-generation college graduate, a U.S. immigrant, a woman, a cancer survivor, a multigenerational caregiver, and a community volunteer.” Cordeiro has been at the forefront of leading efforts for major curricula changes, new pedagogical approaches, and her department’s efforts in implementing and assessing holistic faculty teaching evaluation. Cordeiro has been nominated consistently for teaching awards; she is the recipient of the university’s 2015 Distinguished Teaching Award and the College Outstanding Teacher Award from UMass Amherst’s School of Public Health and Health Sciences in 2013.

Western New England University School of Law Dean Sudha Setty has been named 2021 Human Relations Award winner by the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ), a human-relations organization whose mission is to champion social justice for all; fight bias, bigotry, and racism in all forms; and work toward building strong and inclusive communities. Each year, the NCCJ presents the Human Relations Award to individuals or corporations that have actualized in their daily lives the values and mission of the organization. These individuals and companies have demonstrated their commitment to fostering social justice and cooperation among all races, religions, cultures, genders, abilities, and sexual orientations. Setty became dean of the School of Law in 2018 and has served on the faculty since 2006. She is the author of National Security Secrecy: Comparative Effects on Democracy and the Rule of Law and the editor of Constitutions, Security, and the Rule of Law, and has written dozens of articles on national-security law and policy. In July 2018, she was elected to membership in the American Law Institute. Her leadership of the School of Law has been characterized by a commitment to social justice; diversity, equity, and inclusion work; and supporting excellence in teaching, learning, and research. In May 2019, the School of Law founded the Center for Social Justice, which has quickly grown to be a regional hub of research, advocacy, education, and activism. In April 2021, the faculty of the School of Law adopted an anti-racism and cultural-competency graduation requirement, making it the first law school in the region to do so. Setty is also a founder of the Workshop for Asian-American Women in the Legal Academy, with its inaugural workshop being held in 2021, an effort to support current and aspiring members of the legal academy and to diversify its ranks. She was recognized on the Lawyers of Color Power List in 2020; was recognized as part of Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly’s Top Women in the Law in 2019; was awarded Western New England Law School’s Catherine J. Jones Professor of Year Award in 2009, 2016, and 2018; received the 2017 Tapping Reeve Legal Educator Award from the Connecticut Bar Assoc.; and was recognized in 2015 as a Trailblazer by the South Asian Bar Assoc. of Connecticut.

Elms College announced the retirement of Kathleen Scoble, dean of the college’s School of Nursing, effective Sept. 10. The college has been conducting a national search for Scoble’s successor since she notified the college of her retirement this past January. When Scoble joined Elms College in 2003, the Division of Nursing consisted of one baccalaureate program with 100 students. In the 2020-21 academic year, there were nearly 500 nursing students enrolled in the 12 programs that now comprise the School of Nursing. Scoble established several forward-looking programs, such as the Doctor of Nursing Practice and the Master of Science in Nursing programs, as well as the Accelerated Second Degree program. In March 2019, she helped create a unique partnership with the Episcopalian University of Haiti to offer a continuing-education certificate program that prepares the future Haitian nursing workforce to deliver competent, patient-centered care within their communities. In recognition of her stewardship of the School of Nursing, Scoble has been named dean emerita of the School of Nursing, becoming the first Elms College dean to receive this distinguished title. The college has also created the Kathleen B. Scoble Leadership in Nursing Award, which will be presented each year to the nursing student who best exemplifies the ideals of servant leadership, as demonstrated by Scoble, through academic excellence and the individual’s impact on the School of Nursing, Elms College, and the greater community. On Sept. 13, Teresa Kuta Reske — associate dean of Graduate and Doctoral Studies for the School of Nursing and director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice program — became interim dean of the School of Nursing and will remain in that role until a new dean is hired.

Ariel Clemmer, director of the Western New England University School of Law Center for Social Justice, was named a 2021 Emerging Women Leader in Law by the Women’s Bar Assoc. (WBA). The award honors women attorneys who have demonstrated professional excellence or had a significant professional achievement in their first 12 years in the legal profession, and promote the status of women in the legal profession or contribute meaningfully to the equal participation of women in a just society. The university’s Center for Social Justice works toward advancing social justice through research, advocacy, education, innovation, and public engagement. It is designed to strengthen collaborative efforts between the School of Law and the region to work toward a more just, equitable, and inclusive society. In addition to providing services like a Consumer Debt Initiative and a Sealing and Expungement initiative to the community, the center has conducted Know Your Rights trainings, provided financial support for initiatives that seek to measure and mitigate the legal fallout from COVID-19, and hosted nationally recognized speakers like Evan Wolfson, the legal architect of the marriage-equality movement. Clemmer is among six to receive this prestigious award. The 2021 awardees will be celebrated and honored at the WBA’s annual gala on Monday, Oct. 25.
